Lawn Diseases that Invade Pinellas County, Florida Lawns

Horticare of America has been providing lawn care services in the Pinellas County area for over 30 years. In order to protect your lawn from the destruction of lawn disease, you must first learn to recognize them. The three most common lawn diseases that plague our local properties are:

Brown Patch Fungus
Brown Patch is an aggressive fungus that causes your grass leaves to turn yellow, then reddish-brown, then straw-colored. Eventually, it causes your grass leaves to die. It usually occurs in the fall and develops on grasses that experience heavy rainfalls or overwatering.

Fairy Ring
Fairy ring spreads along the root system of our grass, depleting the nitrogen that your lawn needs to survive. Here in Florida, it appears yearly, usually in the same spots. It likes to fester in hot weather and after heavy rainfalls. It also produces mycelium or a web of fine white threads that harden and kill the grass by keeping water from reaching its roots.

Dollar Spot
Dollar spot is called such because it appears in a pattern of dead circular patches the size of a silver dollar. The small patches grow and quickly take over large patches of your grass. Dollar spot causes lesions to grow on the leaves of your grass that start as a light tan but quickly turn white to straw-colored as the lesions develop. Dollar spot loves humidity and thrives well in our humid environment.
